With the NCAA regular season coming to a close and the NCAA Tournament just around the corner, it’s time for awards week at The Hoops Manifesto. We’ve teamed up with some of the best NCAA writers on the web to vote on who gets the (virtual) hardware. Next up: Non-BCS Player of the Year (player from outside the ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, and SEC).
2012 NCAA Non-BCS Player of the Year
Forward – Doug McDermott – Creighton – Sophomore
23.2 ppg, 8.2 rpg, 61.0% FG, 52-105 3Pts
It seems to be an occurance pretty much every NCAA season – a “small conference”/”mid-major” player bursts onto the national scene due to his sublime play. Recently we’ve had Stephen Curry, Jimmer Fredette, and Gordon Hayward to just name a few. You can now add Creighton sophomore Doug McDermott to that list. McDermott has had one of the best seasons of any player in college this year, regardless of conference affiliation. Because of that, he is our 2012 NCAA Non-BCS Player of the Year.
Others receiving votes: Damian Lillard
